Oblong's Member Projects

Member Projects are what we call the community groups that we support. See below for more info about all the exciting stuff they do!

25 Spaces

25 Spaces provides 25 spaces for artists, designers, musicians, jewellery makers and creatives generally to sell their wares! All stock is produced in the local community, often from recycled goods, and sold in the local community. Open 12pm till 6pm Monday to Saturday, this shop is based just off Hyde Park.

Allot Moor

A group of hopeful allotmenters are currently in negotiations with the council to get an allotment plot on Woodhouse Moor. They are top of the waiting list and hope to get a plot within the next couple of months. They are keen to grow food, practice permaculture ideas, set up a seed share scheme and maybe even sell their produce to the local community cafes. Contact oblong if you want to get involved.

Oblong supports this group by helping them find a plot, by providing meeting room space, contacts for them to work with and help looking for funding.

Art Asylum

Art Asylum is ostensibly a video/film collective at the moment, but it seeks
to utilise, encourage and develop skills and ideas in every discipline of
the arts that we come across in LS6 and the surrounding communities. Our
initial projects have been focused around shooting local bands in local
venues (including the city centre) on miniDV and editing it for their/our
myspaces, with the option of creating DVD copies for sale or the bands to
use as demos to get gigs or recording contracts. In the process, we provide

Bandstand Allotments

Bandstand is an inner city allotment site just to the north of Leeds
City Centre in West Yorkshire, UK. Rather then following the
traditional UK allotment model of a completely managed, grid
orientated plot system we have a patchwork of plots being worked to
produce vegetables interspersed with communal and wildlife-friendly

The site forms part of Woodhouse Ridge, a small urban forest, formerly
Victorian parkland. As a result the site is very rich in wildlife and
native species. Due to careful management in recent years there has

The Brudenell Entertainments Committee was formed in 2005 to assist this non-profit, member-run bar and venue in times of noise complaints and financial difficulty. To date the group has raised more than £20,000 with the help of Oblong, Awards For All and the local music and arts community.

Circles

The Circles Project is developing a city wide user-led Befriending/buddying service for people who have mental health issues. A buddy will support people to access groups in other mental health facilities and/or mainstream activities in the community.

The service will eventually inreach into hospital wards, day hospitals, day centres and medical centres. Our aim is to help individuals who want to move on, but would find it difficult to leave their existing service without support.

Common Conversation

common_conversation.jpg

Common Conversation offers free conversational English classes to asylum seekers and people of refugee status. We meet every Saturday from 12 - 4pm. We also meet on Tuesdays 5 - 7pm for conversation, tea and coffee. Oblong has helped them secure funding, recruit volunteers, design publicity and even plan some of the lessons!

Crank Bike Maintenance

Crank Bicycle Maintenance

We run bicycle maintenance workshops and clincs in Hyde Park. At present, we run weekly clinic sessions (Thursday afternoons, 1pm-7pm), where you can bring along your bike and we'll take you through how to fix it, make it better, or enjoy riding more. If there is sufficient interest, we will restart workshops focusing on particular areas such as Brakes & riding position, Gears or Wheels & Hedsets.

At present we operate out of Oblong, but are always looking for new workshop spaces to expand into.
