United Refugee Organisation
The United Refugee Organisation exists to reduce the isolation felt by refugees and asylum seekers.
We intend to hold regular social events from refugees and asylum seekers of all nationalities and backgrounds.
These events help people to make friends, support each other and share a good time. We intend to hold one of these events every month. We aim to introduce local British people to refugees at the social events with the purpose to breaking down barriers in a friendly environment.
Already this year alone we’ve organised two events: one in January was a ‘solidarity event’ promoting Persian cuisine, and in February a big event was attended by over 150 people at the St. George’s Crypt.
To help refugees and asylum seekers access vital information, we provide a free weekly drop-in service (10am – 3pm) in the city centre (at the Common Place, Wharf Street, Leeds) where they’ll be able to:
- Collect relevant leaflets about organisations in Leeds that can be of assistance
- Use the internet to access services
- Enjoy tea, coffee or a shared meal
- Improve English skills with lessons taught by volunteers
We are currently looking for volunteers to help teach English on Wednesday afternoons - no experience needed!
